If you have already installed a monitored home security system and are about to have a DSL connection installed in your home, beware!. DSL stands for "Digital Subscriber Line." This is a medium for transferring data over regular phone lines.The wires used are copper, like a regular phone line but run a much faster circuit than regular phone connections. With speed becoming standard equipment in the world of cyberspace, a DSL makes for a popular choice in to-day's market.
But did you know if your DSL is improperly installed, the high frequency of the connection can interfere and make it difficult for your security system to find a clear signal?

The danger of this happening is that your home alarm may not be able to send an alert signal to the monitoring station in the event of an emergency.

Don't put your security at risk by not installing the proper DSL connection. There are basically two ways to install this connection. The first involves splitters to separate the high speed of the DSL and the lower speed of other devices.

Essentially, you will have two phone lines systems in your home, one for high speed internet and the other for all other phone line devices like security systems, telephones and even fax machines.

Splitters are generally installed in homes where you have an existing security system installed and don't need a DSL hook-up at every outlet in your home. This method does not need any adjustments to your existing devices.

The second method is referred to as a splitterless installation. It involves connecting filters to all devices in the home with the exception of the DSL modem. This will give you DSL capability to all your connecting outlets within your home.

Some telephone and ISP companies only offer this type of DSL connection, which is often installed by the consumer. You will be required to purchase and install filters for each device in your home.

The downside to splitterless technology is that the filters can be expensive and they do not amplify the speed of the line once it has left the security system control panel creating a slow DSL speed to your computer.

Alarm companies are working on dual purpose filters that slow down the DSL signal coming into the control panel and speed it up when it exits. This will provide DSL capability throughout your home and at the same time ensure that your security system won't let you down.

Let's look at another line of communication with your home security system, the phone line! You must eliminate the possibility of damage to the juggler vein of your system by installing a cellular "backup".

This is an additional piece of equipment that is installed to your security system. When installed, the equipment actually backs up your phone line with cellular service. If your phone line has been tampered with, the cellular back up will kick in and transmit a signal to the central station assuring open communication at all times.

Of course an installation cost and extra monthly charges can be expected, however when you consider the extra security, it's cheap insurance.
